Evolutionary psychology is the branch of psychology that studies the behavioral aspects that have been passed down generations, and are inherited traits. It also studies the reason behind why some traits are inherited. For example, a son behaves exactly like the father and also has the same habits. It also relates to memory, perception, language, and adapting. |
A part of evolutionary psychology is explained through Darwin’s Theory of Natural Selection or Sexual Selection. Psychologists believe that human behavior is a result of efforts to resolve the problems of the ancestors and the same is passed on to the offspring. For example, humans have adapted the ability to speak a certain language from their ancestors, but they have not acquired the ability to read or write it.
Evolutionary psychologists believe that some qualities are clearly passed from the parents to their offsprings. This includes physical habits, mental traits, body language and many more things. We often hear people telling he is just like his father or she is just like her grandmother. That is because people identify a certain trait with the child’s own ancestors, including parents. This may not only mean the physical features. The identical behavioral patterns are also something that gets recorded in the genes and can be passed down.
So, behavior is also derived from the human genes and possible cure for behavior problems can be found based on this concept. However, to have a deep understanding of this aspect, one has to study several generations altogether.
