Down syndrome can be detected in the womb and in the scans. The child's spinal chord will show an abnormal growth if it has the syndrome. Several couples do not wish to have the child if they discover that the baby has the syndrome. There is a belief that a baby that is born with Down syndrome does not live for very long.

Down syndrome is caused because there is one extra chromosome in the child. Usually all normal babies have 21 chromosomes. Children who are born with this syndrome will learn to sit, talk and also do most of the things that any normal child would do.

In the US, statistics show that nearly 5000 children with downs syndrome are born every year. The rate of prevalence is very high and nobody is sure why the chromosomal defect occurs. It could be genetic and if there have been other children born that way then the possibility is higher. However, for a mother, if one child is born with Down's syndrome, then it is not a must that the rest of the children will be born with the same disorder. So, the exact facts for its occurrence are still unknown.
